simbolis statusas T sritis informatika apibrėžtis ↑Ženklas, ženklų seka arba kitoks sutartinis ženklas, reiškiantis kurią nors sąvoką arba objektą. Simbolių vaidmenį dažnai atlieka ženklai, tad „ženklas“ ir „simbolis“ gali būti vartojami sinonimiškai. Tačiau kalbant tiksliau, šiuos terminus reikėtų skirti. Simbolio funkciją gali atlikti ir kelių ženklų seka, žodis, paveikslėlis. Pavyzdžiui, valdymo ženklai neturi grafinio pavaizdavimo, taigi jų nėra ir šriftuose. Tačiau jie turi simbolinius raidinius žymėjimus (pvz., tarpo ženklas žymimas SP). Programavimo kalbose operacijoms žymėti pritrūksta matematinių ženklų ir jos įvardijamos ženklų, dažniausiai raidžių, sekomis, pavyzdžiui, Paskalio kalboje dalybos operacija žymima baziniu žodžiu div.
